District 17, which encompasses all of Rockland County, was created out of District 11 by a proposal approved by the NYSNA Board of Directors in 1947. Gladys Weber, RN, was elected president of the new 100 member organization at the first meeting on November 20. In 1957, District 17 was incorporated as the Professional Nurses Association of Rockland County (PNARC). The mission of PNARC is to promote the professional practice of nursing at the local level, while being fully cognizant and supportive of the common interests of nurses at the state and national levels. PNARCs stated goals and objectives are to:
- Provide an environment for improving nursing practice and enhancing the image of professional nurses.
- Provide a forum for the discussion and dissemination of information related to issues, legislation and other factors that impact on nursing practice.
- Provide support to and participate with other professional and community groups promoting the quality of health care for the community.
- Provide social opportunities for professional nurse to network.
The Professional Nurses Association of Rockland County is active in many professional and academic endeavors. The District was instrumental in identifying the need for first an ADN, then a BSN program in the county. PNARC was a founding member, and is a continuing participant in the annual Rockland County Nurse Recognition Day Program and Awards. Each year PNARC offers stipends to four members to attend the NYSNA convention, holds four continuing education programs, and presents three awards to graduating nursing students who have held SNA leadership positions.
