Mercy College receives $147K in Nursing Student Financial Assistance

Mercy College announced it recently received two federal grants, totaling $147,702, from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The funds, disbursed through HRSA’s Advanced Education Nursing Traineeship Program and Nurse Faculty Loan Program, will be used to provide financial assistance to students pursuing graduate nursing degrees at Mercy.

“We are fortunate to participate in two grant programs that assist students who would not otherwise be able to get their graduate degrees in nursing,” said Mercy’s Associate Director of Nursing Programs, Miriam Ford. “We have several students who have benefited from these programs, and they are doing wonderful work at area institutions.”

McKesson Grant to Fund 25 Undergraduate Nursing Scholarships

McKesson Corporation today announced a grant from the McKesson Foundation has funded 25 undergraduate scholarships through the Foundation of the National Student Nurses’ Association (FNSNA). FNSNA received a $50,000 grant from the McKesson Foundation to fund undergraduate nursing scholarships over the next two years. The funds will be disbursed in 25 $1,000 scholarships for the 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 academic years, respectively.

Scholarships will be awarded to students with financial need and each is renewable for a second year if the student is eligible. Students may download the scholarship application from www.nsna.org under Foundation.

American Academy of Nursing Seeks Applicants for Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity Awards Program

The John A. Hartford Foundation (JAHF) recognizes the centrality of nurses to the care of older adults. In partnership with the American Academy of Nursing, JAHF provides a multi-million-dollar Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity Scholars Award Program to produce expert researchers, academicians, and practitioners in gerontology nursing, and ultimately improve the care of the elderly. The program includes the distinguished Scholar & Fellow Awards Program, which seeks applicants for the following scholarships and fellowships:

Lauterbach Scholarship Fund for New York nurses

The Edna A. Lauterbach Scholarship Fund awards at least one scholarship each year, designed to assist an RN or LPN with training or education, who is interested in pursuing an entrepreneurial venture in home or community-based care. The scholarship fund was established in memory of Edna A. Lauterbach. The fund is open to any nurse who lives or works in New York, and is administered by the Community Foundation for the Capital Region, a statewide, independent, non-profit organization. Senator Patricia K. McGee Nursing Faculty Scholarship Program

Senator Patricia K. McGee Nursing Faculty Scholarships are being offered to increase the number of educators and adjunct clinical faculty teaching nursing education in New York State. Awards are made on a competitive basis to applicants who are registered professional nurses enrolling in master's programs which will qualify them as nursing faculty or adjunct clinical faculty.

Applications Invited for CampusRN/AACN Nursing Scholarship Fund

CampusRN, an employment Web site for nursing/allied healthcare students, and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing offer a scholarship program for students pursuing professional nursing education programs. The program supports students seeking a baccalaureate, master's, or doctoral degree. Special consideration is given to students enrolled in a master's or doctoral program with the goal of pursuing a nursing faculty career; completing an RN-to-baccalaureate program (BSN); or enrolled in an accelerated baccalaureate or master's degree nursing program.

Applicants must already be enrolled at an AACN member institution and hold a grade-point average (GPA) of 3.25 or greater. Information and application information is available online.

Bureau of Health Professions Scholarship Information

The Health Resources and Services Administration administers scholarships available under the federal Nurse Reinvestment Act. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and nationals enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a professional program as a full- or part-time student in an accredited school of nursing. Applications are available online.

The following contain information about scholarships, fellowship grants and loans for undergraduate and graduate education. While some are specific to health professions, others are applicable to all areas of study.

Wiredscholar.com assists high school students and their families planning for college. The site provides resources for locating scholarships, evaluating award letters, comparing school characteristics, and much, much more.

www.bphc.hrsa.gov: Registered nurses nationwide often find it hard to get ahead financially, especially when they are saddled with education loans. Nurses who work in underserved areas might be able to participate in a federal program expressly created to alleviate their education debt.

The Nursing Education Loan Repayment Program (NELRP), created by Congress in 1990, provides economic incentives for men and women to enter and stay in the nursing profession. The program is administered by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), a division of the US Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). Depending on the length of service, up to 85% of a participant's student loans can be paid.

www.hesc.com: The New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) is the state agency that helps people pay for college by administering the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP), guaranteeing student loans, offering guidance and providing a top-rated College Savings Program for students and families. Other information/services include: NY Mentor, a service provided free of charge to help students plan and prepare for college. It is an online resource to help students and their families select a college, apply for admission, and plan to finance their college education; Mapping Your Future Chat Nights - these live chats, scheduled for 7-9 p.m. Eastern Time, provide an opportunity to receive advice on the college admissions and financial aid process. Mapping Your Future interactive chats are designed to help students understand career, college and financial aid information from the privacy and convenience of a personal computer; Parent/Student services; Financial Advisors; and much more. There is also a search engine available on this site.

www.finaid.org: A comprehensive site providing free access to a wide variety of financial aid resources. There is also a search engine so you can put in key words and get information on aid for specific topics. A link to SRN (Scholarship Resource Network) gives even more scholarships, fellowships, and grants.

www.collegenet.com: In additional to being a guide to colleges and universities, there is a scholarship search engine. From the home page, click on "Scholarship" and follow the instructions.

www.salliemae.com: While Salliemae is the primary provider of loans to college students, the site offers financial aid information as well. To search for financial aid one has to click on scholarship and follow the instructions.

www.aacn.nche.edu: The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) is the only national association devoted exclusively to furthering baccalaureate and graduate degree level nursing education in America's four-year colleges and universities. AACN does not have scholarship or financial aid program, but this fact sheet offers information about nursing education funding for prospective and current nursing students. We also suggest consulting the following resources for financial aid information: the schools that you are applying to or currently enrolled in; your local or state higher education organizations; private foundations and businesses; the Internet and your public library.
