The New York State Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Statewide System celebrates Nurses Week by releasing the winning essays for its statewide Nursing Essay Contest. The essays were the winners of a regional AHEC contest, then blind reviewed by the New York State AHEC System Nursing Council to select a winner.
Rose H. Stiles, a home care nurse for Cortland County Health Department from the Central NYS AHEC, won a $100 local prize as well as a $200 award from the NYS AHEC System for her winning entry. First and second honorable mentions went to Catherine Thompson, a geriatric nurse practitioner at Mount Sinai Medical Center and Phyl McKinney, who works at East Samaritan Medical Center. Catherine is from the Manhattan-Staten Island AHEC, and Phyl is from the Northern New York AHEC.
The AHEC Statewide System celebrates the intriguing and poignant stories nurses and students share about a special patient, the joys of the profession, or recalling why they made the decision to be a nurse. Winning essays are posted on the AHEC website.
