Berger Commission update

The New York State Department of Health has reported that 62 hospitals and nursing homes have submitted applications for financial assistance in following the requirements of the Berger Commission.

The commission’s recommendations, which became law in January, require healthcare facilities to close, merge, or downsize by June 30, 2008.

According to the DOH, the total amount requested by facilities is $2.5 billion and the total amount available from state and federal sources is $550 million. Health Commissioner Richard Daines stated that the funding awards would be announced by the end of September.

These facilities have applied for funding and have NYSNA local bargaining units: Bertrand Chaffee Hospital, Brooks Memorial Hospital, Brunswick Hospital Center, Cabrini Medical Center, Ellis Hospital, Erie County Medical Center Corporation, New York Methodist Hospital, Westchester Square Medical Center, Peconic Bay Medical Center, Peninsula Hospital Center, Sound Shore Medical Center, Southampton Hospital, St. Charles Hospital, Van Duyn Home and Hospital, and Westchester Medical Center.
