REPORT: July/August 2006 Amended ‘rad tech’ bill passes Legislatureby Nancy Webber A measure that would expand the practice of radiologic technologists (RTs) was approved by the State Legislature, but only after being amended to enhance patient safety. If enacted, the law would allow RTs to inject contrast media, a procedure which currently can be performed only by physicians, RNs, or LPNs. NYSNA and its members were concerned that, in an outpatient setting, patients might not receive needed assessment and emergency treatment from licensed healthcare professionals. The amended bill included two new provisions supported by NYSNA members. One would ensure that a physician is immediately available to respond in the event of an emergency. The other requires that a patient be evaluated by a physician, physician assistant, or RN on the day of the procedure to determine their medical fitness. As Report went to press, the bill was being reviewed by Gov. George Pataki. |
