REPORT: October/November 2006 e-leaRN™ is live!Health care is changing rapidly, and registered professional nurses must keep their knowledge and practice up to date. In the past, major obstacles to this goal have been the time and expense of taking continuing education classes. Now, with the advent of the personal computer and the Internet, nurses can earn CE contact hours at home at very little cost. In October NYSNA unveiled e-leaRN™, a new CE Web site for nurses. The site evolved from the online continuing education courses that used to be available on the NYSNA Web site. All of the e-leaRN™ courses are approved by NYSNA and are written and reviewed by experienced nurse educators. “We are excited about being able to offer convenient, affordable CE for nurses at a stand-alone site,” said Renée Gecsedi, director of the NYSNA Nursing Advocacy and Information (NAI) Program. The program provides a range of educational opportunities for registered nurses, including a popular on-site workshop on preventing malpractice. There are now nearly 100 courses on e-leaRN™, with more being added each month. They cover a complete range of topics in a variety of practice areas and settings. New and updated course offerings include: Infection Control and Barrier Precautions and Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse in New York State, both of which meet New York State requirements for licensing and re-registration. Results can be sent automatically to the State Education Department. Influenza: Impact, Prevention and Control is a timely look at the epidemiology of “the flu,” possible complications, and treatment options. HIV/AIDS: How Far Have We Really Come? provides an overview of the current scope of the pandemic, HIV testing, and the RN’s role in treatment of the disease.
